We have pipes. And dedicated flooding areas around the river. Not just for rain, but also tides. One of them was originally planned as harbour extension, but that plan was scrapped and the area was repurposed for flooding. The century flood of 1946, when a storm surge paired with the spring thawing, helped a lot with overthinking water management, but the flood in 1981 was crucial with designing new flood plains.

Well I know when my 1994 Chevy Corsica stopped being safe. When it was brand new... mine was like 10 or 15 years old when I got it. Besides the weight, the biggest Factor to crashes is the differences in the vehicle structure height. Bumper mismatch can make a safe car very dangerous to other people, or a safe car useless to its occupants.

This video is bullshit the 940 is still by far the safest car in the video. The old red block Volvos have steel in the firewall to prevent the motor from being pushed into the cab. I have personally seen pictures of the same car in a head on collision with a suburban and the metal in the firewall did its job. The occupants of the Volvo walked away with barely any scratches.

As an industry veteran, I've been waiting forever for the right market pressures to be in place, for all modern tire testing to be conducted with the tires at both new, and 50% worn tread depth conditions. It's always seemed unwise to only test them at the wear status they'll spend the very least amount of their service life at. We must demand more.

One problem of highway engineering is counterintuitive. "Clear zones" make sense on highways, but they are often implemented on suburban and urban streets (looking at you Florida), and when drivers see a wide road with few obstacles on the shoulder, they drive more quickly.

I just upgraded from a 2007 to a 2018 car and the change in technology is huge. Back up camera with cross traffic sensors, the blind spot sensors, the warnings for approaching a stopped vehicle, lane departure etc. I consider myself a safe driver, but it's pretty incredible what the tech can do now to make it even easier to be safe, and prevention is always the best safety.

In Australia we get floods that none of this would stop. I worked with a local railway and a train crew were flown back. For 160 km 100 miles they could not see a farm fence post either side of the plane. Water was at least 3 to 4 feet or more deep over 100s of 1000s of square miles of land on what is knwn as flood plains. Ground is level as a table top almost. Good luck holding that back

while i was was house hunting. my relator would somehow only find houses that were in flood zones. i live in south Mississippi, where coast flooding will occur when a hurricane comes through. anyway, i got rid of that relator. he couldn't find any out of the flood plain, i also said to him "who builds houses in a flood plain?" "oh those are houses that are from the 60-70s. just waiting for a hurricane storm surge to wipe them off." "you mean Katrina didn't wipe them?" "surprisingly, these survived" i currently live in a house that i know cant be flooded unless the sea rose to about 50ft from its current level

This is an eye-opening look into the effects of better planning. This makes me appreciate what other cities hae done to make the lives of their citizens better. Right now it's raining like hell in Nairobi, Kenya and there is no planning for our city. Infrastructure has been destroyed, lives lost, disaster management is in shambles and nobody gives a duck.

I love how our solution to the "Oops, I messed with nature and caused huge problems" problem is to mess with nature some more. We paved over the land causing more runnoff, so we made it easier for that runnoff to get to the rivers, which meant that whenever it rained the rivers instantly flooded instead of gradually and releasing water slowly and naturally, so we built dams to co that, which causes all sorts of other problems for wildlife. This is why humanity sucks.
